About
The Centre for Experimental Mathematics is a Type 1 academic entity housed in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, in the Faculty of Science of Stellenbosch University. Its aim is to harness scientific activities that bring together fundamental research in mathematics and computer programming. The Centre was founded by an initiative of Professor Barry Green in 2006 and has continued its existence under the leadership of Professor Helmut Prodinger until his retirement in 2020. Current affiliates and partners of the Centre are listed below.

Constitution
- The name of the academic entity is Centre for Experimental Mathematics (CEM).
- CEM is a Type 1 academic entity in the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University.
- CEM is managed by and all of its activities (such as those listed in Item 6 below) are coordinated as a collaborative work of the Directors of CEM, and where necessary, in consultation of the Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
- The Directors must be either permanent staff members or extraordinary appointments in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, whose research interests lie in either mathematics or computer science and touch on the synthesis of pure mathematics and computer science.
- Affiliates of CEM are academics or students, not necessarily based at Stellenbosch University or even in South Africa, who contribute and/or benefit from the activities of CEM. Affiliation with CEM does not entail any official appointment with the Department of Mathematical Sciences or Stellenbosch University. The list of affiliates is merely a network of academics unified by research interests in synthesis of mathematics and computer science.
- The CEM supports researchers who are permanent staff members in the Department of Mathematical Sciences in their research that bridges pure mathematics and the writing of software, in the following ways:
- showcasing their work through seminars,
- sourcing funding for research assistantships and partial teaching buy-out through partnerships with other similar centers and universities within and beyond South African, as well as the industry,
- providing help, through consultation, in their teaching/supervision activities within the Department of Mathematical Sciences that involve synthesis of pure mathematics and computer programming.
- CEM encourages free distribution of software arising from research carried out under the support of CEM to established online repositories, such as the GitHub.
- CEM showcases its activities on a regularly updated website linked to the website of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
- Such website also gives information about who are the affiliates of CEM and includes this Constitution.
- Directors of CEM are appointed by the Dean of Science for a term of 3 years, based on a joint recommendation from the Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences and at least two staff members of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, whose research interests lie in either mathematics or computer science and touch on the synthesis of pure mathematics and computer science. There should preferably be two Directors, one representing Computer Science and the other representing Mathematics.
